Post-basketball, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has become one of the nation’s most passionate and vocal advocates for social justice and racial equality—in print and in person.

Time and study and the wisdom they confer have given Abdul-Jabbar the confidence to confront the establishment and to lead by word and example. A casual look at the myriad books and articles he has written show how broad his knowledge and passions extend: sports, racial justice, history, black culture, and much more. And this range of curiosity and self-expression has equipped him to give us sound advice about how we can all work together to effect change.

In response to the question of how white people can possibly comprehend the experiences of African Americans, he has said, “You listen. You try to empathize.” And like President Obama, he points to the strength and timelessness of American institutions as a way of seeking inclusiveness, fairness, and cooperation. “This is the beauty of the Constitution,” he has said. “It’s made it possible to have a morality we can all agree with. The Constitution and the Bill of Rights exist to enable all faiths and colors to agree with what is right and what is wrong, lawful or unlawful, despite differences of religious backgrounds. It’s why America gets things done, and why we have to include everybody, and work toward that end.”
